Phi Kappa Phi was established as an honor society in 1897. The local chapter was formed in 1965. There are nearly 300 chapters in North America and the Philippines . The society's purpose is to promote the pursuit of excellence in all fields of higher education and to recognize outstanding achievement by students, faculty, and others through election to membership and through various awards for distinguished achievement. The letters stand for the Greek Philosophia Kratei Phôtôn , Let the Love of Learning Rule Humanity.
Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and the top 7.5 percent of juniors. Minimal criteria are satisfactory progress toward a degree and the following: for second semester juniors, 75 units with a 3.75 GPA (overall and at SDSU); for seniors, 90 units with a 3.65 GPA (overall and at SDSU); for graduate students, 15 graduate units at SDSU with a 3.90 GPA. Invitations to membership are extended in early spring.
The chapter annually provides upwards of $3,000 in stipends for graduate or professional study, and graduating seniors are eligible for one of 50 $5,000 national fellowships or 50 $2,000 fellowships.
